Flat-topped White Aster

Doellingeria umbellata (formerly Aster umbellatus)

This relatively early Aster is easily recognized by its flat-topped clusters of small (3/4" or less) flowers with relatively sparse petals, and the tightly packed, lance-shaped, untoothed leaves marching up the stems.

2-6 feet, sun or partial shade.

Late Summer (August-September).

Note the sparse petals on each flower; unlike many other Asters, the yellow centers of this species do not turn reddish before going to seed, but simply turn brown.
