Bloodroot

Sanguinaria canadensis

This early spring flower sends up shoots with a pair of basal leaves that at first parly enclose the buds or flowers.  The leaves continue to grow after the flower has withered, becoming several inches wide; the grown leaves are many-lobed and have an unusual appearance.  Flowers have a varying number of white petals of oblong shape, and a center of yellow stamens.  It is one of the first woodland flowers to appear as the weather begins to warm, and quite showy.

Under 1 foot, partial sun.
