Common Cattail

Typha latifolia

Amid the long, stiff, spear-like leaves are the flowering heads, which when ripe have a chocolate-brown tube of pistils. The stamens appear above them but slough off as pistils ripen to brown.

acquatic; 3-9 feet, sun.

Spring-Summer (May-July).

Less-developed plants show the stamens above the still-green pistils.
