Cup-plant

Silphium perfoliatum

Flowers yellow, large (3-4 inches across); stems squarish, smooth. The plant's name derives from the way the large pointed upper leaves join at their bases to form a cup-like depression around the stem. (Hence also the Latin name, literally "through the leaf.")

4-8 feet, sun or partial sun.

Summer (July-September).

Leaves with standing water in the 'cup.'
