Wild Ginger

Asarum canadense

This woodland plant is most readily noticed and identified by its large leaves (6 inches or more across), heart-shaped and always in a pair rising from the root on separate, hairy stalks.  Each leaf is smooth-edged, prominently veined, and has a deep indentation where it joins the stalk.  The small, dark red or brownish flower of three petals grows in the fork formed where the two leaf stems join, at ground level.
