Late Goldenrod  (Giant Goldenrod)

Solidago gigantea

This tall, showy species produces a large flowering head sometimes one foot across. Florets have 8-15 rays. Leaves are large(up to 7 inches), plentiful on the stem, alternate, sessile, with small but definite teeth, and have 3 parallel veins.  Stem is smooth and light green or purplish in color.

This North American species has been introduced to Europe, where it is invasive and the target of control measures.  


2-7 feet, sun or partial sun; moist habitats preferred.


Late Summer-Autumn (August-October).

Large lanceolate leaves on smooth, purple or green stem; teeth barely visible at this magnification.
