Purple Poppy Mallow

Callirhoe involucrata

The beautiful magenta flowers of this plant are about 2 inches across and have 5 petals.  Each flower is held on a stem, sometimes of several inches, arising from the leaf axils of the plant. Leave are palmate with five main lobes, each of which is itself notched or toothed. The leaves are borne on their own stalks growing from a main stem, which grows from the taproot and is recumbent or climbing and may reach several feet in length, vine-like.  I

Summer (June-September).

  Like many mallows, this one has a relatively stout column in the center of the flower containing the pistils and stamens.
