May-apple  (Mandrake)

Podophyllum peltatum

The plant produces on round stems a pair of large (9 inches across) deeply divided horizontal leaves, under which, in the crotch there the two leaf-stems join, appears a yellow-white flower, up to 9 petals and about 2 inches across. These are often hidden by the leaves above (see photo below).


Under 2 feet, shade - partial shade.


Spring (April-June).

  The large leaves, often in colonies,   form a cover hiding the flowers.
