Pale Smartweed

Persicaria lapathifolia (formerly Polygonum lapathifolium)

A native weed, this plant has nodding spikes of white or pale pink flowers, each spike about 2-3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide; each floret is only about 1/8 inch long. It resembles several other Smartweeds (genus Persicaria) but can be distinguished by its larger size and the fact that the sheaths around joints on the stem (not visible here) have no visible fringes. Leaves are large (up to 5 inches long, lance- shaped, smooth and smooth-edged, on a short petiole.
