Ohio Spiderwort

Tradescantia ohiensis

Frequently encountered in Chicago, this native perennial produces clusters of buds that bear lovely blue-violet flowers of three broad, rounded petals and six brilliant yellow anthers. The flowers appear in the morning and wither by afternoon, to be replaced next day by another. The stems for each flower are smooth (which, along with its greater height, distinguishes this plant from other spiderworts). The plant is often a rather rangy clump with linear leaves, parallel-veined and smooth-edged, about 1 inch wide at the base, tapering gradually toward the tip, and as much as a foot or more in length.

2-4 feet, sun - partial sun.
