Spring Beauty

Claytonia virginica

One of the first flowers to bloom in spring, this stalwart little plant pushes up through the overburden of dried leaves in the woods to announce itself. The flowers are about 5/8 inch across and have five pale pink or white petals with darker pink lines, and several pink-tipped stamens. Leaves occur in a pair; they are linear or thin-lanceolate, rather fleshy in feel, smooth, with smooth edges and a prominent vein in the center.

Under 1 foot, partial sun.
