Virginia Waterleaf

Hydrophyllum virginianum

This plant has compound leaves with 5 or 7 leaflets; each leaflet is lance-shaped and toothed.  Flowering stems bear loose clusters of lavender or whitish tubular or bell-shaped flowers, about 1/2 inch long, with a fringe of stamens that project far out beyond the end of the bell. After the flower blooms, the calyx behind the bell turns brown and the petals drop, thought the stamens sometimes persist for a time (see photo below).

1-3 feet, partial sun.

Spring-Summer (May-August).

Note the long, exerted stamens, and the brown calyx on bloomed-out flowers.  Note: the long leaves are not those of Virginia Waterleaf, which are better seen in the photo above (left side and bottom).
