Tall Goldenrod

Solidago altissima

This species has large, branching flowering heads atop stems that are covered with hairs and feel rough. Florets have 9-15 rays. Leaves are plentiful along the stem, large (10 inches or more near the base), toothed, and rough/hairy on the surface.

There is debate among taxonomists as to whether this is a species distinct from Canada Goldenrod (S. canadensis), or should be considered a subspecies or variant of the latter.  This specimen had leaves that were markedly toothed (see photo at bottom) but this feature may be variable.
